We were proud to support the restoration of Betley Court, an 18th century Grade II listed building in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, by supplying the roof slate used in its rebuild.

In August 2019, a devastating fire tore through Betley Court’s main house, completely destroying the homes of the 20 residents and the beautiful 18th century building inside and out. Due to the scale of the damage, restoration work took several years to complete, with every detail carefully considered to respect the heritage of the building
As a Grade II listed property, preserving the original character was a key priority. This was especially important when selecting the bricks, stone, and roof slate to ensure they stayed true to the original materials. Fortunately, as leading providers of natural slate roofing, our team worked closely with the contractors to advise on the best match and ultimately supplied our Vermont Structural Unfading Green slate
Our Vermont Structural slate was chosen due to its aesthetic appearance, matching closely with the original Westmorland Green roof slate. We stock this slate in a diminishing courses by random widths package which further mirrors how the slates would have been originally laid. This traditional style of slating carries many practical benefits, allowing for a smooth curve around the conical dormers, while the wider slates supported a full hipped roof construction. Originating from the USA, Vermont Structural slate is tested to ASTM standards, ensuring excellent durability and weather resistance, qualities that make it suitable for both UK and the extreme climates it is used in overseas.
The roofing work was carried out by Attleys Roofing Ltd, a specialist contractor well known for its expertise in heritage and listed building projects. Their craftsmanship, combined with the quality of the slate has restored the roof to a standard that honours the building’s history while ensuring long-lasting protection.
We were honoured to supply the slate for this project and are delighted with the finished results. Betley Court now stands as a carefully restored landmark, thanks to the dedication of everyone involved in the rebuild.
